By the time Kano was willing to let me out on my own, I was a mess. My nerves were fraying at the edges of my control.
He handed me a small bag much like his waterproof one. âThis has money in it should you need it. I shall be on the beach whenever youâre ready to head back at sunset. Just remember everything I told you and you should be fine.â
âThanks.â I spoke through clenched teeth as I took the bag to slip over my shoulder.
âBe careful.â I heard him say as I walked away from him. For half the day, heâd shown me around the town until I knew where everything was.
This place was a small fishing town. Filled with families who had lived here for hundreds of years. Outsiders didnât show up often, so everyone watched us as weâd made our way around today.
Some knew Kano from his previous visits. When heâd been banished, heâd told me how he had pretended to live among them. Making them believe he lived just outside of town near the shore and only came to town for supplies when needed.
He was good with them, blending in seamlessly. Had I not known of him prior I would have assumed he was as human as the rest here in town.
I wandered around until I came to a place Kano had called a library. It was a place where the humans kept knowledge in the forms of something called books. I couldnât read the texts, but I wanted to learn. How hard would it be to learn on my own?
Slipping through the doors a soothing scent filled the air. I wasnât familiar with it, but it felt safe as I wandered the shelves. Not sure what I was looking for, but enjoying the fresh change of scenery.
âExcuse me miss, can I help you?â A soft voice spoke.
I turned to see an older human. Her hair was a dusting of silver and black as I looked her over. âI was just looking. Do you have anything on the town's history or legends?â
I wasnât sure what humans called their recorded histories, but that seemed to work as her eyes shone brightly behind clear frames that sat on her nose.
âOf course, just follow me. Do you happen to have a library card?â
Crap, I didnât know what that meant. â No, I do not.â
âIâd be happy to get you one. You can borrow books and return them later.â She flashed a kind smile at me over her shoulder as she led me around the place and answered any questions I had.
I came to learn that her name was Martha, and sheâd been working at this library since she was a child. Sheâd moved here with her father during her first year of life. Her father had been a fisherman from her stories.
âThis town has many legends, the most popular being that about mermaids.â She said, handing me a book with the image of a siren on the front cover.
âMermaid?â I asked, flipping through the pages even though I could not read the words.
